SooOOooCKS!

The best thing about knitting your own socks is that they can be knit to fit and they are very comfortable. Socks also require minimal finishing if you work with one color. All the shaping is done while you knit without breaking the yarn until the very end, so there are only two strands to weave when you're finished: the cast-on tail and the bind-off tail.

I have sock knitting tips here.

The Edited Socks

YARN: Regia, size 0 needles

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: I call these the edited socks because the white & black faux fair isle sections in the self-patterning yarn (below) were cut out. In total 24 sections were cut from both socks (12 each).

Finished April 2005

Toe-up Purple Stripey Socks

YARN: Regia, size 0 needles

NOTES: The toe is adapted from the baby sock in the Magic Loop booklet (I started with more sts, followed the instructions for the Figure 8 cast on, and kept increasing until it fit around my foot) and the short row heel is from "Simple Socks Plain & Fancy."

Blended Rainbow Socks

YARN: Trekking, size 0 needles

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

Finished October 2004

Regia Stripey Socks

YARN: Regia, size 0 needles

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: I like stripey socks and this self-striping yarn makes it so easy.

Finished September 2004

Olympic Socks

YARN: Trekking, size 0 needles

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: I made these socks while watching the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics and knit the last stitch while watching the closing ceremony. The yarn doesn't thrill me (it looked a lot better in the skein, which is why I bought it) but they were knit during a memorable two weeks so I will enjoy wearing them.

Finished August 2004

Mexico Socks

YARN: Fortissima Socka Mexico #9076, size 1 needles

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: This is a colorful self striping yarn. It doesn't look like the promo photo though, I bought this colorway because it was supposed to have a light lime green in it but as you can see there is no lime green.

Finished July 2004

Sockotta Socks

YARN: Plymouth Sockotta (45% cotton / 40% wool / 15% nylon), size 1 needles

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: The cotton content in this yarn made my hands ache so it's not high on my list of "must use again" yarns.

Finished July 2004

Hummingbird Socks

YARN: Fortissima Colori Socka Color #2419 (kolibri) size 0 needles, 10 sts/in, 80 sts cast on

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: I call these the hummingbird socks because the colorway was named "kolibri" by the yarn company and that means hummingbird in German.

Finished May 2004

Fiber Trends Felted Clogs (Slippers)

YARN: Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Bulky or dyed Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool

PATTERN: Fiber Trends

NOTES:

This was my Christmas 2003 gift project. So far I've made 10 pairs of these slippers for family and friends, everybody loves them.

The instructions call for 600 yards doubled of Woolpak worsted for a woman's size medium. I'm using Lamb's Pride Bulky not doubled so I cut that number in half. Each skein of LPB contains 125 yards. Instructions say that approx 2/3rd of the yardage should be the sole/cuff color and the remaining 1/3rd should be the foot color. So I purchased 3 skeins of LPB (2 black, 1 green) to make one pair.

Lovely pattern, but I had a lot of the second skein of black left over. So this is what I did on the 2nd pair to avoid buying a third skein of yarn:

Use size 11 needles throughout (you might run out if you use size 13)

INNER (not outer) soles:
Rows 1 through 5: use foot color

Rows 6 and 7: use sole/cuff color (to prevent color blips when attaching the outer sole to the slipper)

That's it, everthing else was done following the instructions. I was able to use just 2 skeins of LPB (for a woman's size medium) with plenty of yarn left over to sew up the seams using the appropriate color. The mohair in LPB is rather hairy after felting so I used sharp scissors to give the slippers a trim.

This will only work for the size small or medium. I needed 3 skeins when I made a woman's size large, 3 skeins for a man's size medium, and 4 skeins for a man's size large. (One skein of Lamb's Pride Bulky = 4 ounces.)

Baltic Sea socks

YARN: Lorna's Laces (Baltic Sea colorway) on size 0 needles

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: This is pricey sock yarn but the socks feel great.

Finished May 2004

Blue Trekking Socks

YARN: Trekking sock yarn

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: This is the first pair of socks I knit on size 0 needles. Blue is one of my favorite colors and I like the randomness of the striping.

STRIPEY KNEE SOCKS

YARN: Regia sock yarn

PATTERN: Toe up, made it up as I went along. I adapted the toe from the baby sock in the Magic Loop booklet and used one of the heels in the Twisted Sisters sock book. To shape the calf I tried it on every so often to see when it needed shaping — and took notes so the second sock would have the increases in the same rounds.

NOTES: This started out as a regular pair of ankle socks but I liked the stripes a lot and thought they'd look cute as knee socks. I am not so sure that was a bright idea, the gauge is 9 sts = 1 inch on size 1 needles (in other words, it took forever to finish them). But they do look cute. :)

REGIA SOCKS

YARN: Regia sock yarn, 9 sts = 1 inch on size 1 needles, 72 sts c.o.

PATTERN: Modified from a pattern in Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles by Cat Bordi

NOTES: I like this self-patterning yarn so much I made three pairs from the same colorway. I gave these socks to my Grandma for Christmas 2002, my mom has the second pair (no photo), and I kept the third pair for myself (see next sock).

REGIA SOCKS

YARN: Regia sock yarn

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: Here's the sock shown on my sock tips page. I made this pair for myself.

Regia yarn wears the best of all the sock yarns I've tried but they're all pretty good.

GREEN RAGG SOCKS

YARN: 80% wool/20% nylon. This black/grey/white ragg yarn was recycled from a thrift store sweater and then dyed green.

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

NOTES: The sweater's yarn content label said 80% wool/20% nylon and it was fingering weight, so the sweater was essentially made with sock yarn. :)

JENN'S SOCKS

YARN: Patons Kroy "Stained Glass" (sock yarn)

PATTERN: Modified from a pattern in Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles by Cat Bordi

These were made for my older brother's girlfriend. She picked out the yarn. I also made socks for both brothers, my younger brother's wife, my Mom, and my Dad (all Christmas 2002 presents) -- and never found the time to take photos of all those socks before they were given away! Doh.

DAN'S BORING SOCKS

YARN: Stahl Socka

PATTERN: my own basic sock pattern

These were made for my friend, kinda boring but he picked out the yarn so it's what he wanted! At least I talked him out of solid black.

PURPLE SOCKA SOCKS

YARN: Stahl Socka 50

PATTERN: Modified from a pattern in Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles by Cat Bordi

NOTES: I believe this is the first adult sock I made but the yarn doesn't currently exist in this form. I never wore it (because I didn't knit it a mate) so I eventually ripped it out to knit the yarn up again into a pair of socks for Andrea. Unfortunately I didn't take a photo of those socks.

SEATTLE MARINERS CHRISTMAS STOCKING

YARN: Two acrylics from my stash

PATTERN: Modified from a pattern in Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles by Cat Bordi

NOTES: I made this Christmas stocking for my older brother Mike. The colors didn't turn out in the photo but they are the teal and dark blue of the Seattle Mariners and the colors look a lot better in person.

The pattern is just a standard pattern found in a sock book, but I used worsted weight yarn instead of lighter sock weight and a larger needle size to ensure the sock was BIG like a Christmas stocking should be. (I was able to knit everything except for the toe on one 16" circular — that's a big sock!) There's plenty of room for presents... or a lot of coal. Has Mikey been good or bad?

The stocking is lined with a dark blue flannel and the jingle bells were purchased at a fabric store.

I used the two circular method when the sock became too small to fit on just one 16" circular (after decreasing began for the toe).
