Racism in "Jazz"

Grandmother was suspicious of [Dorcas and I] being friends. She never said why but I sort of knew. I didn't have a lot of friends in school. Not the boys but the girls in my school bunched off according to their skin color. I hate that stuff -- Dorcas too.

Questions:
1) Why did the girls group themselves according to skin color but the boys didn't?
